With Liberty And Marriage For All

Thursday, May 31st, 2012

Vermont has many fantastic locations to host your wedding and I’ve posted about why choosing to marry in Vermont is oh-so-smart, but I spoke to a bride recently who chose VT in part because they wanted to marry in a state with marriage equality.

Yup, a straight couple chose VT because you can get married here no matter who you love.  Talk about a values based decision.  I think it’s beautiful.  Simply beautiful.

It’s pretty obvious by now that I think Vermont is an awesome state in which to marry, but this takes the wedding cake.  Marriage equality doesn’t only matter to same-sex couples…it matters to many, many more of us.

So to sum up, Vermont is awesome and so are the couples who get married here.

The bride I spoke with loves pink so a pink bouquet seems fitting for this post!  The bridal bouquet below includes garden roses, ranunculus, tulips, and godetia for a lush, romantic style.

Yellow, White and Green Wedding At The Brick House

Tuesday, August 16th, 2011

Anne & Jeanne had a beautiful, intimate summer wedding at The Brick House in Shelburne.  The color palette of yellow, white and green creates a clean and bright display of seasonal flowers with an elegant, romantic feel.

The view from The Brick House is quintessential Vermont.

The brides carried small clutch bouquets of hydrangea, freesia, sweet peas, fresh mint and roses.  Also pictured here are a yellow spray rose boutonniere with chamomile for Jeanne’s father and small gathering vase of hydrangea, roses, freesia and yarrow for the cocktail tables.

A ceremony on the lawn with the backdrop of the lake set a gorgeous scene.

The centerpieces included white & green hydrangea, yellow Asiatic lilies, ranunculus, spray roses and white & creme de la creme garden roses for a lush, romantic feel.

Gorgeous linens and rental items were provided by Vermont Tent Co. and Cloud 9 Caterers handled all the details on the scene.

Congratulations to Anne and Jeanne on your Vermont wedding!  It was the perfect day and your destination wedding came together beautifully!

“Jeanne and I wanted to thank you for putting together such beautiful arrangements – the mix of flowers were wonderful and contributed to making our wedding day very special…Again, thank you, thank you!”  -Anne & Jeanne

Planning a gay wedding in Vermont

Monday, February 7th, 2011

I attended a seminar over the weekend with Bernadette Coveney Smith, President of 14 Stories Gay Wedding Institute.  I’ve been following her on twitter so I knew she was the expert on planning gay weddings, but meeting her and talking about planning same-sex weddings with other Vermont wedding pros was seriously cool and long overdue.

Over 10 years ago I started designing flowers for civil unions (our old school version of the gay wedding before same-sex marriage passed in 2009!), but hearing from Bernadette made me feel even more “ready & able” to advise couples on unique traditions that are specific to a modern day LGBT wedding.  We were introduced to new traditions that many of us who attended the seminar agreed would be welcome replacements to some old wedding traditions that we think could be retired!  {For example you won’t be hearing “When A Man Love A Woman” played anytime during the reception!}

Bernadette spoke about a “triumphant energy” that a same-sex couple feels when they are pronounced legally married that resonates with me now as I write this.  We still have a long way to go until there are equal marriage rights across this country for all citizens and that makes Vermont a unique and special destination for all weddings.

I appreciate that Bernadette made the trip from Boston to Stowe to educate us on what’s happening in the gay wedding scene and how we can better serve our clients.  Visit gayweddinginstitute.com to learn more about 14 Stories.

Check out one of my favorite weddings, Andy and Laura, Part 1 here and Part 2 here!  I love their bold color palette and fabulous details.

This centerpiece includes pin-cushion protea, orange mokara orchids, delphinium, hot pink roses, ‘fiesta’ spray roses and a gerbera daisy.

There were so many great details at this wedding that I just had to share a few more with you!  This first picture is a super cool branchy sculpture that greeted guests as they came up the driveway.  It must have been 10 or 12′ high.branchy sculpture

Inspiration for the decor was drawn from many different sources.  A picture in Vermont Vows magazine gave Andy the idea to hang a framed bouquet on the side of the lounge area.

Here’s a closer look at a centerpiece including orange mokara orchids, pin-cushion protea, gerbera daisy, blue delphinium, raspberry pink roses and ‘fiesta’ spray roses.

Two green cymbidium orchids with lily grass were the centerpiece for the sweetheart table.

I love their pagoda!

This is the view of the pond and tent from the pagoda.  A perfect Vermont setting!

And like any truly perfect Vermont wedding there was a bonfire by the pond and lanterns light the pathway at the end of the evening.  What a beautiful day!

Andy & Laura

Andy and Laura’s wedding in September of 2008 was filled with fabulous details.  The ceremony and reception took place at their home in Jericho (just a few miles away from my house) and the setting was absolutely amazing.  I love their style and they took great care to create an amazing day for their guests.  A newly renovated pond took center stage in the yard and all the days’ activities took place around it.  Dish was there to serve up a fabulous feast.  Doesn’t the menu sound tasty?!

love the fun and festive look of the tent!  I made three different centerpiece designs for the tables to create an eclectic, funky feeling.  A few of the tables had large stems of cymbidium orchids in tall clear glass vases and the rest featured beautiful glass bowls that Andy found which were filled with either arrangements of orchids, protea, roses & delphinium or floating orchids & candles.  The colors really worked with the late September foliage.  The linens and rentals are from Vermont Tent Co.Orchids, protea, roses & delphinium centerpiece

Guests entered through a lovely cocktail lounge (in the garage which looked nothing like a garage when they got done with it!) and walked past a pagoda on their way to the ceremony.  The couple had a path cleared through their woods and created a space for the ceremony.  Guests walked through an old doorway along the way that Laura found at some sort of architectural salvage (which is SO fabulous!) and colored banners were strung up in the trees (a good 15-20′ high, too!) to billow in the breeze.doorway in woods

Even though there are a few feet of snow outside my window right now the bright colors from the foliage at this wedding are making me feel all warm and fuzzy.
