Tall Centerpieces…And Why I Hate Them

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012

It’s been a while since I’ve written a Love it/Hate it post, but a recent consultation with a bride who expressed her horrible experience with tall centerpieces at a friend’s wedding has ignited my flame.

People often choose tall centerpieces to make a large ballroom feel more “full” or to give a feeling of opulence, but there are drawbacks.  I think they are impractical and obstruct the guests’ view across the table.  If a guest has to move a centerpiece off the table to feel more comfortable that’s a bit of a floral faux pas.  If my centerpiece hindered conversation and socialization at your wedding I’d be pretty bummed.

Taller pieces are also more top-heavy which means when your Uncle George leans on the table after a few glasses of vino something may get tipsy…and I’m not talking about your uncle!  I’m a firm believer in not booby-trapping your wedding.  Even the amazing Preston Bailey, Oprah’s go-to floral designer, has shared horror stories of his impressive pieces causing chaos at a reception.  You simply cannot predict how guests are going to interact with your table decor.

I simply dislike tall centerpieces.  They may seem impressive when you first enter the reception, but once seated your guests are staring at the base of the vase and the real action (aka the flowers!) are above their heads.  Short and sweet, I think your centerpieces should be short and sweet.  If your guests can easily see across the table, then the centerpiece is the right size.

Here are a few centerpieces that are full, colorful and will not hinder conversation.

Winter Wedding Flower Tips

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

Winter weddings can be cozy and romantic…especially in Vermont!…but flowers and winter weather don’t go well together.  It’s straight forward enough that freezing temperatures will kill flowers.  Anything below 35 degrees is sure to end the life of your fresh blooms nearly instantaneously.  If you’re planning a winter wedding don’t bring flowers out in the cold.  (Easy rule of thumb:  If it’s snowing outside, it’s too cold for your flowers.)

If you are planning a winter wedding here are some tips for handling your fresh flowers:

Get 2 bouquets; one for photos before the ceremony and one for the vows.

Use “permanent botanicals” (aka artificial flowers) for any outdoor activities like photos of you frolicking in a snowy field…otherwise be advised that your bouquet may be frozen before you say “I do”.

Have your florist deliver bouquets to the ceremony location so you don’t have to walk outside with them.  If you have to move from one location to another have someone put a plastic bag (or two) over the flowers so the cold air doesn’t touch them.  I can’t stress enough how quickly the cold can take the life out of a fresh flower.

Limit your time outdoors even if the mercury rises above 35 degrees.  Florists store fresh blooms in coolers that are around 40 degrees (give or take a few), but winter air can be more harsh so keep your outdoor photo ops short and sweet.  You may want to take a few photos with your bouquet and then have someone run it inside so you have additional outdoor pics without your flowers.  Same rules apply to boutonnieres by the way!

If you opt to use some wintery greens like pine or cedar they will be more cold tolerant, but choosing to marry in winter doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to have an “evergreen” inspired event, however.  Based on this info you may be wondering how I got this bouquet photo on a snowy day…Well, we were fortunate that it was about 40+ degrees that day and the flowers are NOT touching the snow.  We still wrapped the flowers for delivery so they wouldn’t get a chill!

The above bouquet includes lisianthus, callas, roses, hydrangea, freesia, leucodendron and berzilia.

Rustic Vermont Wedding At The Round Barn

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011

Today’s wedding is not only charming, but captures the essence of a rustic-chic barn style.  Cassie and Joel had their November wedding at The Round Barn with vintage details that truly represented the spirit of Vermont’s farm style.  The groom is a large animal veterinarian so keeping the style “true to Vermont” was not only a goal, but it was well executed by the couple with their handmade wedding details.  Texture including thistle and wheat were essential to their floral style and I love their palette of whites, peach and blue.

The bride wanted a textured bouquet which was designed with thistle, scabiosa pods, peach & white roses, ranunculus, dahlias, hypericum, dusty miller and accents of millet.  Cassie’s excitement as I delivered her bouquet made my day!

Their ceremony in the milking parlor featured a wreath of hydrangea, lotus pods, gerberas, roses, hypericum, wheat and thistle.

Antique cream buckets filled with snapdragons, thistle, eucalyptus, millet, roses, hydrangea and gerberas also framed the ceremony.

Eclectic milk bottles added an authentically rustic feeling to the barn.

A handmade XOXO burlap banner for the sweetheart table was just TOO CUTE!

Pails with a weathered patina were filled with hydrangea, roses, dahlias, thistle, dusty miller and agronis to add another eclectic element to the tables.

Maple cream favors of “Grandpa’s Stuff” were displayed on the wagon…

…And a chalkboard sign reminds guests not to forget their “stuff”!

A homemade horseshoe wreath of wheat adorned the family wedding photos.

Cassie & Joel had these signs made for the wedding day.

I love the sign at The Round Barn directing guests to the reception, too!

Congratulations to Cassie and Joel who pulled together some fantastic details to create a warm & welcoming wedding filled with personalized details!  It was a truly Vermont-inspired event!  I can recall in our consultation as Cassie said, “I’m sure the flowers will be beautiful,” then Joel looked at her and said, “You’re going to be beautiful.”  It may have been the sweetest thing a groom’s ever said to a bride during a consult.  I told my husband that I got a good feeling about these two!

Callas And Hydrangea Wedding

Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

Teresa and Sean were married on 11-11-11 at The Ponds with about 40 close friends and family.  Their color palette of purples and whites brought a little color to the cool, almost snowy day.  The bride loves white callas and her bouquet included over 20 stems of mini callas for an elegant, romantic look.

I wrapped the stems with a lavender ribbon and blingy pins.

The maid of honor carried a few darker purple accents including purple stock, lavender & white roses, freesia and white hydrangea.

The bridesmaids carried bouquets of white and lavender to set them apart from the MOH.

Centerpieces in faux silver bowls were made up of white and purple hydrangea, lavender stock, roses and willow eucalyptus.

Here’s a closer look at the hydrangea and roses in the centerpiece.

Congratulations to Teresa and Sean!  It was clear that you were surrounded by loving, helpful friends and family on your big day and I hope it was fantastic!

Burgundy, White And Green Wedding Bouquets

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

Fall weddings in Vermont often go hand in hand with a foliage inspired color palette, but Natacia and Ross chose a different route for their October wedding at The Barn at Boyden Valley.  Burgundy, white and green made up the palette including fluffy white hydrangea, gorgeous burgundy dahlias and roses in whites and green.  This is a color combo that is both fun and sophisticated at once.  I think it also transcends season and could work for a wedding any time of year.  Here is a look at the flowers for the wedding party…

The bride carried a bouquet of white hydrangea, burgundy dahlias, scabiosa, roses, lisianthus and dusty miller for a silvery accent.

The bridesmaids carried green and white roses, dahlias, and scabiosa.

The ring bearer carried a small moss pillow.  We watched him pat the pillow throughout the vows.

Congratulations to Ross and Natacia on your nuptials!  You had quite a party going in the barn and I hope it was a dream day for you both!

Fresh Flower Shoes By Alison Ellis

Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011

My busy wedding season is winding up next week and I’d been looking forward to stepping out of the normal bouquet box to design something fun and unique for The Vermont Wedding Affair last Saturday.  I was inspired to use fresh flowers and greens to create “floral artistry” that you won’t normally see at a wedding.

Here’s a look at my floral fashion collection on display at Shelburne Farms.

Israeli ruscus, berzelia and purple trachellium with a lily grass wrapped heel.

A peek-a-boo pump covered in pink protea petals and foliage.

Billy buttons and trachellium adorn this Israeli ruscus heel with aspidistra leaf insole.

The purse was my favorite piece!  I wove a pattern with lily grass and added a pink button with pearl pin accents.

Over the weekend Vermont wedding vendors and engaged couples alike enjoyed a day at the Vermont Wedding Affair.  As always the event was filled with inspiring details, top rate vendors, complimentary spa treatments, savory bites and endless sweet treats.  I conducted a seminar with tips on personalizing your wedding day and I’ll pass along some tips to help you plan your upcoming wedding on my blog as well!

Were you at The Vermont Wedding Affair?  What did you think of the experience?

October Wedding At The Round Barn

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

It was an incredibly beautiful October day for Kristen and Chris’s wedding at The Round Barn.  The sun was shining, the temperature was warm and love was in the air.  This local Stowe, VT couple had a color palette with a nod to fall, but not an autumnal theme, so touches of lavenders and blues added a bit of contrast.  There were happy guests exploring the grounds as the couple took photos before the ceremony and as the band was warming up in the barn it was clear that this was going to be a fantastic party!

The bride carried a bouquet of orange dahlias, yellow callas, red spray roses, fresh lavender, freesia and ranunculus with hypericum berry accents.

The bride did not have a traditional bridal party, but there were 3 adorable flower girls!

Wooden benches brought a rustic, Vermonty touch to the outdoor ceremony.

Guests were asked to select a stone to hold during the ceremony.

Colorful centerpieces included lilies, roses, dahlias, freesia, delphinium, sweet William and lavender.

Small mason jars added a little color to the cocktail tables.

The lighting in the barn by Sperry Tents was such a nice touch!

Candy favors in little burlap bags were a sweet take-home treat for guests!

Congratulations to Kristen and Dobby!  I am sure you and your guests partied the night away!  The day could not have been more beautiful and I hope it was perfect in every way.

Purple, Green, Fuchsia and White Wedding Flowers

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

Jessica and Micah had so many beautiful customized details for their destination wedding at The West Mountain Inn in Arlington, VT…I’ve really been looking forward to share them with you.  Gorgeous invitations, custom table runners and custom lucite vases for the centerpieces set the tone for the overall wedding style.  Their color palette of purples, greens, fuchsia, white and silver accents created a modern, elegant look for the day.

The bride’s bouquet was an array of orchids including white cymbidiums, purple vanda orchids & white dendrobiums with freesia, lavender roses & spray roses.

Her four attendants carried bouquets of lavender roses, brunnia, sweet William, purple stock and white spray roses.

A group shot of bouquets shows all the texture and variety of the blooms.

The custom invitations give you a sense of the color palette and modern style.

Custom lucite vases filled with unique, textured blooms including purple vanda orchids, white cymbidiums, roses, leucodendron, brunnia, trachellium, thistle, agronis, eucalyptus, sweet William, and stock added a modern vessel to the table.

The table runners matched the motif of the invitations (and the stamps!) and truly made the tablescape complete.

A display of silver pumpkins directed guests to their seats.

Mercury glass style containers added another touch of silver to the cocktail hour.

The tent was so beautiful and colorful.  It was fun and elegant all at once!

Jessica had a vision for the ceremony and an aisle lined with mums from a local nursery created a dramatic display in the barn.

Congratulations to Jessica and Micah!  I really enjoyed your unique style and all the pieces you planned came together more beautifully than I had imagined.  A lot of family hands helped pull so many details together, especially the mother and father of the bride!  October may have started out on a rainy day, but it also started with a celebration of love and a lot of fantastic details.

Fall Wedding At The Ponds

Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

Lauren and Mark’s destination wedding took place at The Ponds on a crisp, fall Vermont day.  It’s officially foliage season, the leaves are starting to strut their stuff and the view from the porch was full of color.  The style for their wedding was natural and elegant with a palette of deep purple (which in this flower family was more of a deep burgundy tone), white and green with some orange accent tones to bring out the seasonal fall tones.

The bride’s bouquet included green cymbidium orchids, burgundy dahlias, callas, white roses, mini green hydrangea and scabiosa.

Before we left the studio I took a shot of the bride’s bouquet with one of her attendant’s bouquets.  A few orange roses added a bit of contrast for the two bridesmaids.

The flower girl carried a pomander of plum mini carnations, orange spray roses and green dianthus.

The ceremony in the historic Round Church in Richmond featured a floral wreath on the pulpit.

Centerpieces in birch containers included agronis, orange & white roses, green hydrangea, burgundy dahlias and scabiosa.

A place card display with family wedding photos welcomed guests to The Ponds.

Custom signs added a rustic, personalized touch.

Congratulations to Lauren and Mark on your beautiful day!  This wedding came together with the entire family’s labor of love (including a father of the bride who was ready to unload our van full of flowers on the wedding day!!) and it’s lovely to see how all the planning came together.

Romantic Garden Wedding At The Round Barn

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

Laura and Andrew selected  The Round Barn in Waitsfield for their destination wedding in Vermont.  For their fall wedding the color palette was anything but traditional autumnal tones.  Members of the wedding party wore pinks and grays and the flowers featured pale to raspberry pinks with whites and yellows.  Laura’s vision for a romantic, natural style is right up my alley and we were a good fit from the beginning.  They may have planned their destination wedding from NYC, but Vermont charm was all around.

The bride carried a garden-inspired bouquet of white and yellow garden roses, two-toned pink roses, yellow and white spray roses, pink ranunculus and white lisianthus for a lush, romantic feeling.

Eight bridesmaids carried rose bouquets of raspberry and pale pink with yellow and white accents.

The super cute flower girls wore headwreaths of olive branches, yellow spray roses, waxflower and limonium.

The men wore pink and yellow boutonnieres that matched their ties quite brilliantly.

The ceremony took place outside under our birch arbor which was adorned with garden roses, snapdragons and flanked with sap bucket arrangements on each side.

Shepherd’s hooks with hanging mason jars lined the path down the aisle.

You’ve just got to love a rustic wooden sign to point guests in the right direction!

The reception was pretty in pink from shades of blush to raspberry.  Pin-tuck runners from The Linen Shop At Occasions brought a  lovely punch of color to the barn.

Mossy centerpieces were filled with snapdragons, dahlias, godetia, roses, olive branches and ferns.  Wood burned birch table numbers added another natural element to the tabletop.

I absolutely adore the menu cards printed on paper thin pieces of wood.  The floral and fern motif was also seen on the gorgeous invitations by Christa Alexander (which you can see here!) and the wedding programs.

The place card display brought another rustic, Vermonty feeling to the day.

This soft, romantic palette is beautiful any time of year.

Congratulations to Laura and Andrew on your nuptials!  I can remember my phone consultation with Laura last June and it’s hard to believe the wedding day has finally come and gone.  Truly, it was a pleasure to work with you…your energy and enthusiasm is contagious!  I wish you both all the best for a very happy life together.
